Frequently asked questions
How is accumulated depreciation calculated?
Straight-line depreciation spreads the cost minus salvage over the useful life, then multiplies by years elapsed. A $50,000 asset with $5,000 salvage over 10 years has accumulated $13,500 after 3 years.
What is book value?
Book value is the asset's cost minus accumulated depreciation. It falls each year until it reaches the salvage value at the end of the useful life.
What is accumulated depreciation in simple terms?
It is the total value an asset has lost since you bought it. Each year a share of the cost is written off as depreciation. This tool adds those yearly amounts up to the present. It shows how much of the asset value is used up.
What does salvage value do here?
Salvage value is what the asset is worth at the end of its life. Only the cost above the salvage value can be depreciated. A higher salvage value means a smaller yearly depreciation. So it sets the floor that the book value approaches.
What is book value and how is it found?
Book value is the asset worth on paper at a point in time. It is the original cost minus the accumulated depreciation. As depreciation builds up each year, the book value falls. It moves down steadily toward the salvage value.
