Frequently asked questions
How is the total coin weight found?
Multiply the number of coins by the weight of each one. A pound coin weighs 8.75 grams, so 100 of them weigh 875 grams.
Why weigh coins?
Counting by weight is a quick way to total large quantities of the same coin. Banks and machines often use it to tally change without counting piece by piece.
What does total weight mean here?
Total weight is simply the combined weight of all the coins added together, shown as a single figure in grams. It assumes every coin is the same, so the number you get is the weight of that many identical coins. If you have 100 coins that each weigh 8.75 grams, the total weight is 875 grams. The more coins you have, or the heavier each one is, the larger the total.
How does the tool work out the weight?
It is a simple multiplication: it takes the number of coins and multiplies it by the weight of one coin. So 100 coins at 8.75 grams each comes to 100 times 8.75, which is 875 grams. There is nothing more to it than that, which is why the result updates the moment you change either number. The answer is always in grams, exactly as you entered the per-coin weight.
What is missing from this figure?
It assumes that every coin is identical and weighs exactly the same, so it does not work for a mixed bag of different denominations. For a mix, you need to weigh each type separately and add the group totals yourself. It also takes the per-coin weight at face value, so it does not allow for wear, dirt, or small variation between coins of the same kind. Use an accurate weight figure, because the total is only as good as the number you put in.
