Frequently asked questions

How is MAGI calculated?

Take your AGI and add back certain items such as tax-exempt interest and excluded foreign income. An AGI of $85,000 plus $2,000 of tax-exempt interest gives a MAGI of $87,000.

Why does MAGI matter?

Many tax benefits, from Roth IRA eligibility to premium subsidies, phase out based on MAGI rather than AGI. Which items get added back can differ by benefit, so check the rule that applies.
