How to use the electricity cost calculator
Enter the number of kilowatt-hours you used and the price you pay per kilowatt-hour, and you get the cost for the period. It is simple multiplication - but it is the only way to make sense of a bill built from several separate charges.
The default scenario
Start from the values it loads with:
- Consumption: 2,000
- Price per kilowatt-hour: $1.50
A worked example
2,000 kWh at 1.50 per kilowatt-hour costs 3,000. That is roughly a winter month in an electrically heated house, while a well-insulated apartment often uses only a couple of hundred kilowatt-hours a month.
Your bill has more than one part
You pay for the energy itself to your chosen supplier, a network charge to the grid operator you cannot choose, and taxes on top. This calculator handles the first part; the rest appear as their own lines on the invoice.
Find the right unit price
Take it from the bill rather than the advert. Many tariffs quote a headline rate and then add a markup per kilowatt-hour plus a monthly fee, so the effective price you actually pay is higher than the number used in marketing.
Fixed, variable or hourly
A variable contract follows the market and has historically been cheaper over long periods, but it swings. A fixed contract buys predictability for the duration of the term. Run both through the calculator with your own annual consumption before you commit.
Hourly pricing rewards flexibility
With an hourly tariff you pay what each hour actually costs, which favours anyone able to run the washing machine, charge a car or heat water when demand is low. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive hour can be substantial in winter.
Standing charges do not scale
The fixed part of the network charge is paid whether you use anything or not. For a low-consumption household it can dominate the bill, which means that percentage savings on energy translate into a much smaller change in what you actually pay.
Work out your annual consumption
Your supplier reports usage by month. Take a full year and divide by twelve for an average - but remember that an electrically heated home can use four times more in midwinter than in midsummer. An annual average hides exactly that peak.
Where the energy actually goes
In a heated home, space heating and hot water dominate, followed by appliances, lighting and electronics. Lowering the indoor temperature by one degree typically saves a few percent - considerably more than hunting down standby consumption. Start at the top of the list.
Common mistakes
Comparing tariffs on the headline unit rate alone, forgetting that network charges sit outside the comparison, and estimating consumption instead of reading the meter. All three make the comparison unreliable. Always compare the total for a full year rather than a single month.
Make it a quarterly habit
Read the meter, calculate the cost here and compare with the previous quarter. Knowing your annual consumption in kilowatt-hours lets you negotiate, switch supplier and judge an investment in insulation or a heat pump on numbers rather than instinct. Electricity is one of the few large household costs where a single meter reading per quarter gives you complete control.
